Book Review: Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of The World's Healthiest and Longest-lived Peoples

Every book by John Robbins is a cause for celebration. His latest work, Healthy at 100, is a fitting sequel to his many excellent books on health, diet and human ways of living. He is best known for the best-selling Diet for a New America. Dr. Dean Ornish, the famous expert on health and cardiovascular diseases, wrote that "Healthy at 100 may be his finest work to date."

Healthy at 100 is primarily about scientific studies that show it is possible to retain good health even when one goes beyond 100 years old. He cites the studies about the Hunzas of Pakistan, the Vilcabambas in the Andes, the Abkhasians of the Caucasus, and the Okinawans of Japan, who have unusually percentage of centenarians among them still living active and productive lives -- not sickly or bed-ridden people suffering from dementia. It is a powerful affirmation of the wisdom of adopting a plant-based diet.

But this book is not simply about healthy old age. It is about culture, human values, the power of love and human relationships not only in relation to health but also to a joyful and meaningful life. He cites many studies that show that love and relationships can often have a greater effect to health and disease than other well-known factors such as diet or smoking. As with his previous books, his chapters are replete with citations of scientific studies that give the reader a strong confidence in taking immediate action about one's own lifestyle.
