Deer Hunting

This deer hunting season in the Midwest has been up close and personal for me.  I currently live with a friend who has allowed hunting on the property of 5 wooded acres.  I endured the view of a beautiful deer hauled onto the back of a truck and calling it a "harvest".  My friend is a wildlife lover, and loves nature - but eats flesh and believes in hunting for the control of the deer population.  I do not want to lose a friend, but the practice of hunting for sport on the property where I live is not acceptable to me. What is being done, and what can be done about this killing sport that is taught to children before they reach their teens?  This practice appalls me but I am at a loss as to how to proceed in a positive manner to help create change.  Any projects, organizations that are actively approaching this issue?  I belong to the TOS, PETA, and the Humane Society but as far as I have knowledge, no active projects are taking place.

Thanks,

Pati

hi patty, it is awful to

hi patty,
it is awful to think of killing any wild creature. deer are so graceful and beautiful, too. i think tho that you may not have much information on what has happened with deer in this country. when the first europeans were arriving, the natural habitats of the USA (full of deer predators back then) kept the population to around a half million HEALTHY deer (only healthy ones survived). those predators are mostly long gone. now in the early 21st century we have about 30 million. yes, 30 MILLION. the result is that the deer routinely destroy natural habitats that many other wild animals badly NEED to survive. the deer herds also experience a lot of starvation and sick animals that are carrying lyme disease and other diseases. the number of serious traffic accidents involving deer running across roads has also skyrocketed. it is truly a bad, very out of control situation.
thought you might like to know these facts.
all the best, sofia
