A Weary Planet’s Best Hope: Theosophical Education

by Kathy Gann

One of H. P. Blavatsky’s fondest and sweetest dreams for the theosophical movement she brought to life was that it should usher in a new, enlightened form of truly theosophical education.   Though her dream is beginning to come true, we need your help to make it grow—please read to the bottom of this article and help with a donation if you agree that theosophical education is one of the best ways to build a more compassionate future for life on this planet.

One obstacle stood in HPB’s way during her lifetime: money, or rather, the lack of it.  “If we had money,” she wrote in The Key to Theosophy, “we would found schools. . . . Children should above all be taught self-reliance, love for all men, altruism, mutual charity, and more than anything else, to think and reason for themselves. . . . We should aim at creating free men and women, free intellectually, free morally, unprejudiced in all respects, and above all things, unselfish.  And we believe that much if not all of this could be obtained by proper and truly theosophical education.”

As HPB knew, there’s no stopping an idea whose time has come, and the time has come for theosophical education.  Since 2002, the Golden Link College (grades preschool through college) in the Philippines has been a living model of theosophical education.  This doesn’t mean that children simply learn the teachings of theosophy, but instead it involves wholistic development of the child’s personality and character.  As Golden Link co-founder Vicente Hao Chin, Jr., put it, a school offering a theosophical education is a transformative school that “develops a culture and curriculum that foster the growth of higher faculties that makes one more mature and effective. It prepares an individual for a life of meaningfulness, spirituality, happiness and service. It seeks to nurture people who will make this world a harmonious and peaceful place.”  What a beautiful way to build a brighter future for humanity!  Golden’s Link’s enrollment now exceeds 1,200 students and continues to grow.

In recent years, TOS-USA has been the fortunate recipient of a matching grant from the Kern Foundation for Golden Link College (GLC).  This means that if you donate just $180, it gets doubled to $360 and pays an elementary school student’s annual tuition! It isn’t often that we can effortlessly double our charitable giving, so please take advantage of the Kern Foundation’s generous matching grant and help make theosophical education freely available to more children each year!  Your gift of any size is deeply appreciated and makes a huge difference in a child’s life.  Donate here and choose “Golden Link School” in the drop-down box.
