Meet Our Latest Scholarship Recipient: Joanne Thompson

My name is Joanne Thompson and I am in my last semester of the nursing program at the Oglala Lakota College. I am from a federally recognized Ojibway tribe, Pine Creek. I am one of 14 siblings and I come from a generation that lived by the old traditions. I will become the third person [in my family] to become a Registered Nurse, I have two sisters who became nurses in the 2004. Upon graduation, I plan to work on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation as a nurse. [node:read-more:link]

Bradenton TOS Takes On Massive Library Project

The TS Study Centre in Bradenton, FL, has enjoyed holding their meetings at the Mitreya Center, an interfaith meeting place. A few members of the TS, however, saw an unmet need at the Mitreya Center – its library needed some TLC. Five members of the Bradenton TS/TOS group decided to take on the massive project of reorganising the Center's library, so it would be more accessible to the centre's many visitors. The group is creating a library catalogue, which will be available to the greater Bradenton community, as well. [node:read-more:link]

Children’s Giveaway

On the last day of the Okiciyapi “Helps One Another” Hocoki Sundance at the Rosebud Reservation, a children’s giveaway took place. The giveaway was coordinated by our dear Karen McCormick with the support of her family members. As many know, Karen has had a strong connection with the residents of the Rosebud Reservation and regularly sends items to the reservation for the Christmas Giveaway. Karen is now getting ready for the Back-to-School giveaway that helps the children on the reservation with school supplies. [node:read-more:link]

Meet Kristina Iron Cloud

For the last five years, the Theosophical Order of Service has awarded scholarships to six nursing students from the Oglala Lakota College Nursing Program. The college serves the Pine Ridge Reservation which is situated in one of the poorest counties in the US. Many of the students awarded scholarships in the past have driven over 100 miles to be able to attend classes while working a full time job and having to care for a family.  This year's recipient is Kristina Iron Cloud. With the latest developments happening in our country, there seems to be a greater need for compassion. Like the motto of the TOS, “A union of those who love, in the service of all that suffers,” the Charter for Compassion calls upon all of us to live by certain principles that promote a compassionate lifestyle. China Study, Cowspiracy and Peaceable Kingdom by L. Miles Standish

L. Miles Standish, in collaboration with the Theosophical Society in Phoenix, is donating free copies of the book, The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, PhD, and documentary DVD's, Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, and Peaceable Kingdom: The Journey Home. These resources address three fundamental but closely related issues: human health, sustainability for life on the planet as we know it, and human stewardship in the form of reverence for life. War and the Soul

In 2005, Quest Books published one of its most profound books, War and the Soul by Edward Tick. While this book centers on the topic of soldiers and soul loss after combat, the message is viable for any population and anyone who has dealt with extreme violence and trauma.

No one likes to think about children being mistreated in any way; however, child abuse and neglect are rampant in our society. It is estimated that nationally one in ten children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday, and 90% of those children will know their abuser.

 

The Children’s Advocacy Center—Hope House is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to ending the cycle of child abuse in Covington, LA. Hope House provides a path to recovery and a bridge to justice for child victims of abuse.

Lakota Waldorf School: a light in the heart of Pine Ridge

The Theosophical Order of Service’s (TOS) Rosebud project has been giving gifts of school supplies in the Fall and warm coats and Christmas gifts in the winter to the children of the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota for more than ten years. Our longest running active program, now called the Native American project, it has expanded in recent years to include: giving refurbished computers to students, blankets to elders, computer assistance to a tribal newspaper and scholarship awards to nursing students at the Oglala Lakota College located on the Pine Ridge Reservation. For ten years and counting Karen McCormick of the TOS in the United States has dedicated herself to the TOS’ Rosebud Project aiding Native American children. The Rosebud Reservation, located in the prairie lands of the state of South Dakota in the United States, has the 2nd lowest rate of poverty in the Nation. Karen and her husband work with a group within the Rosebud Reservation called: Okiciapi Wiwang Wacipi which means “They help each other”. [node:read-more:link]
